Miami, FL. (November 18, 2022). Divinely talented Cuban singer-songwriter Ángela Álvarez has risen from the depths of hardship and tragedy to make history at the 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards, securing the win for the prestigious Best New Artist award and becoming the oldest artist to do so at the age of 95.
¨I feel really happy of receiving this award. I dedicate it to everyone who has made part of this dream. To my grandson Carlos for making this possible, to my friends like Andy Garcia who were supporting me every second. Thanks to my Lord, who made my dream came true. I dedicate it to my daughter Martucha, I´m sure is also enjoying this as much as I do, from heaven¨, said Angela.
Álvarez, who grew up in Castro’s Cuba, was driven to become a singer and songwriter from the time she was a young child, and through a number of unimaginable trials and tribulations that life tossed her way, including the premature deaths of her husband and daughter, she never let go of her musical dreams, nor did she allow the glowing flame that always ignited her spirit to flicker out.
Thanks to her grandson, cinematic composer Carlos José Álvarez, who was so moved by his grandmother’s exceptional talent and extraordinary life story that he formed a team of world-class Grammy winning musicians in order to help her record her remarkably profound songs, Ángela completed her self-titled debut album in 2021, the project that led to her historic Latin Grammy nomination and win last night.
Ángela’s groundbreaking Latin Grammy win follows a number of other significant recent milestones in her career, including the release of stunning documentary about her life titled “Miss Angela,” which was developed by filmmakers Paul Toogood and Lloyd Stanton and narrated by legendary actor Andy Garcia; as well as an appearance in HBO’s 2022 film “Father of the Bride,” where she played the role of Tia Pili alongside Garcia.
Angela’s life and music have inspired countless people to overcome even the most extreme adversity and fulfill their own goals. A brilliant example of resilience, she is living proof that any dream can become a reality, no matter how big or how impossible it may seem.
